Hypnosis Myths
MYTH:
Some people can not be hypnotized.
FACT:
Though some researchers state not all people can be hypnotized, everyone has the ability to be hypnotized because it is a normal, natural state that we all enter 2 times or more every day. Here are a few examples:
1. Falling asleep and awakening
2. When you are engrossed in a movie or book.
3. When you are driving and time passes, you miss a turn or arrive at your destination and vaguely remember the drive.
MYTH:
You can be hypnotized to do things against your will.
FACT:
The hypnosis practitioner is simply a guide or facilitator. It is impossible for him or her to “make” you do anything against your will. Contrary to this false belief, it is actually very much opposite. You are completely aware and always in control at all times. You always have the power to stop session or simply refuse any suggestions if you do not like where the session is going.
MYTH:
Under hypnosis you will always reveal secrets and personal information.
FACT:
The truth is you can lie under hypnosis just as easily as you do in your every day life. Interesting enough, hypnosis gives you greater access to unconscious resources, it is quite possible you could tell more creative lies while in trance state. Ultimately, you are in complete control of what you chose to reveal or conceal.
MYTH:
Hypnosis isn’t an effective service.
FACT:
A comparison study shows:
Psychoanalysis: 38% recovery after 600 sessions.
Behavior Therapy: 72% recovery after 22 sessions
Hypnotherapy: 93% recovery after 6 sessions.

MYTH:
Hypnosis is contrary to religious beliefs.
FACT:
Hypnosis can be used to ease or eliminate pain, overcome fears, phobias, addictions, anxieties, and many other problems. While a handful of religious sects have raised objections to hypnosis, today most religious groups accept the proper ethical use of hypnosis for helping people. Some included are Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and most Protestant Christian churches as well as Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and others. Hypnosis is not associated with any of the world religions. A professional and ethical hypnotist respects the faith of clients and will not use it inappropriately to influence a person’s religious beliefs.
MYTH:
A person can get stuck in trance.
FACT:
No one has ever been stuck in a hypnotic trance. Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state that we enter and exit during the normal course of the day. There are no known or reported dangers with hypnosis when working with a trained practitioner. If the hypnotist fails to emerge someone from hypnosis, he or she will return to a fully alert state on their own. Depending on that person’s need for sleep, he or she will either drift on into a natural sleep or or come to full consciousness within minutes.
